Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about getting started with Voidcom.

General

What is Voidcom?
Voidcom is a communication platform for gamers and communities. It offers low-latency voice chat, real-time messaging, video and screen sharing, servers with channels, roles, and moderation tools. DMs are end-to-end encrypted, and all connections use transport encryption (QUIC/TLS).
Is Voidcom free?
Yes. Voidcom is completely free during beta with all features unlocked and no limits. After launch, we'll move to a freemium model — core communication features will always be free. Premium features will be cosmetic and convenience-focused.
What platforms are supported?
Voidcom is currently available for Windows 10/11 (x64). Linux, Android, and a web client are coming soon. Check the download page for the latest availability.
How is Voidcom different from Discord?
Voidcom is a native app — not a browser in disguise — which means lower memory usage and lower latency. DMs are end-to-end encrypted (Discord doesn't encrypt text at all). We use QUIC transport for voice instead of WebRTC, and our Rust server is built for performance. See the full comparison.

Getting Started

How do I create an account?
Download Voidcom from the download page, install it, and launch the app. You'll see a registration screen where you can create an account with a username, email, and password.
How do I create a server?
Click the "+" button in the server sidebar. Give your server a name and optional description. You can make it public (discoverable) or private (invite-only). Channels are created automatically, and you can add more as needed.
How do I invite friends?
Inside your server, use the invite system to generate a shareable invite code. You can set usage limits and expiry times. Send the code to your friends — they can use it to join your server.
How do I join a voice channel?
Click on any voice channel in the server sidebar. You'll automatically connect and can start talking. Use the controls at the bottom to mute, deafen, or adjust your settings.

Voice & Video

What voice quality presets are available?
Voidcom offers 5 quality presets: Esports (48 kbps, 5ms frames — fastest reactions), Low Latency (48 kbps, 10ms frames), Normal (64 kbps, 20ms frames — default), High Quality (128 kbps, 20ms frames), and Maximum (256 kbps, 20ms frames — best for music).
How do I set up push-to-talk?
Open your voice settings and switch the input mode from "Voice Activity" to "Push-to-Talk". Then assign a keybind. Your microphone will only transmit when you hold that key.
What's the status of video and screen sharing?
Video and screen sharing is functional — capture, hardware-accelerated H.264 encoding, SFU forwarding, decode, and grid/speaker view layouts are all working. The feature is in alpha. See the roadmap for updates.

Security & Privacy

What does end-to-end encryption mean?
End-to-end encryption (E2E) means your messages are encrypted on your device before being sent, and only decrypted on the recipient's device. In Voidcom, DMs are E2E encrypted — the server stores zero plaintext. Server channels use transport encryption (TLS) so that server owners can moderate their communities. Voice currently uses QUIC transport encryption, with E2E voice encryption in progress.
How are passwords stored?
Your password is never stored in readable form. We use industry-leading password hashing that's resistant to brute-force and hardware attacks. Even if our database were compromised, your password would remain protected.
Does Voidcom collect my data?
We collect the minimum data needed to operate the service (account info, server memberships). We do not mine your messages, sell your data, or show ads. Our website uses Cloudflare Web Analytics which doesn't use cookies or track individual users. See our privacy policy.

Technical

What are the system requirements?
Windows 10 or 11 (x64), 4 GB RAM, an audio input and output device, and an internet connection. For video/screen sharing, a GPU with H.264 encoding support (NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel) is recommended.
I'm having connection issues. What should I do?
Most networks work out of the box. Try restarting the app and checking your internet connection. If you're behind a strict firewall or corporate network, it may block Voidcom's traffic — try a different network. If you're still having issues, reach out to us.

Beta

When is the full launch?
We don't have a fixed launch date. We're focused on getting the product right. Follow our blog and roadmap for updates on progress.
Will my data carry over from beta?
We intend to carry over all user data from beta to launch. However, during beta there may be rare cases where a database migration requires a reset. We'll always give advance notice if that happens.
How do I report a bug?
You can report bugs by reaching out to us at max@frisson.social with a description of the issue, steps to reproduce, and any relevant screenshots or logs.
